As an attackman on Randolph-Macon College’s
men’s lacrosse team,
Tyler Midwinter ’12 has the responsibility of making field goals. Off the field, he strives for goals of another nature.
A Great Experience Midwinter, a native of Hamilton, Ontario, took a year off after graduating from high school before he decided on which college to attend. “I was originally accepted to McMaster University, a school in my hometown, but I decided to take a year off, work and earn some money,” he says. “During my year off, I was recruited by R-MC's lacrosse coach, Michael Plantholt. During the recruiting process, I learned that I was eligible for the Presidential Scholarship. That, in addition to the fantastic campus atmosphere, helped me decide that R-MC was the college for me.”

math major, enjoys the college life in Ashland. “The competitiveness of lacrosse, the intelligence required in the classroom and the friendships I’ve formed have made my experience so far the best I could have asked for,” he says.
A Major Equation Asked why he chose to be a
mathematics major, Midwinter says, “Since I can remember, math has been my favorite subject. I succeed when challenged with numbers and mathematical equations. The part I enjoy most about studying mathematics is that there is, for the most part, only one correct answer, and finding that correct answer is rewarding. Through my first year and a half at R-MC, I have only had two math professors but both have helped me greatly. Dr. Brian Sutton taught me Calculus during my freshman year and recently asked me to join him in his research. Dr. Bruce Torrence taught me Multivariable Calculus last fall,
and I respect his mathematical talents and intelligence very much.”
Achievements Midwinter has been lauded for his athletic and academic achievements. In 2008, he was presented with an award given to the freshman student who shows the most potential in calculus, and he was presented with an ODAC (Old Dominion Athletic Conference) Honorable Mention in 2009 for his savvy on the lacrosse field. “I felt very honored when I received the ODAC award, as I worked very hard throughout the season,” says Midwinter. “It was also a pleasure to earn this award alongside fellow teammate Pat Egan; however, I feel that I have much more work to do. First of all, from a personal standpoint, All-ODAC Honorable Mention is a great award to earn but I will not be satisfied until I earn All-ODAC First Team Honors. Second, from a team perspective, we have unfinished business. This year, our team hopes to beat Hampden-Sydney at home, make the playoffs for the third year in a row and win a playoff game for the first time since the inception of the ODAC.”
Future Goals Midwinter’s post-R-MC goals are “a little bit up in the air,” he says. “As of now, I plan to return home to McMaster University and earn a master's degree in mathematics.”
