David Lynch '11: "There is a great environment at R-MC." |
David Lynch ’11, a
business/economics major, often takes to the tennis courts when he’s not studying. “I play tennis because it is something I have enjoyed my whole life,” says Lynch. “I had never had a lesson before I came to R-MC, but I had a fair understanding of the game. After a lot of help from the coaches, I have improved exponentially—enough to finally beat my father!—and I am looking forward to improving more this season. It is great to play at Randolph-Macon because the competition is a good level for me, and most of my teammates are better players than me, which keeps me on my toes. Tennis also keeps me in shape when I am not playing soccer.”

The Woolrich, Maine native plays sweeper for the R-MC soccer team and has had a passion for the sport since he began playing in the first grade. “I enjoy soccer because it is a beautiful game,” he says. “Out on the field it is easy for me to forget about everything else, and it is a great way to unwind.” In 2008, Lynch was part of the All-ODAC Sportsmanship Team, and he received All-ODAC Honorable Mention in 2009 for his finesse on the soccer field. He was also voted captain of the soccer team in spring 2009.
Creating Friendships Lynch toured R-MC while a senior in high school and, “coming from a high school nearly twice the size of Randolph-Macon, I was immediately impressed by R-MC’s tight-knit student body and the friendly atmosphere,” he says. “After sitting in on a math class I felt that the class sizes and the availability and flexibility of the professors made the college a great match for me. There is a great environment at R-MC and I have come to create many good relationships with both the faculty and staff.”
A Strong Community As a member of the college’s Resident Assistant (
RA) staff, Lynch helps to build a strong community among the residents in Moreland Hall. “I am here to answer questions and help solve any problems that might arise,” he says. “I enjoy the position because I get to know a lot of people. The RA staff is made up of a great group of people.”
Lynch is also a member of the Theta Chi fraternity. “I enjoy being part of Theta Chi because it has created friendships that will last forever and it has given me many opportunities to meet new people and help the community,” he says. In 2008 and 2009, Theta Chi received the Chapter of Excellence award for meeting the standards that are given to each Greek organization on campus.
Giving Back Lynch’s community involvement runs the gamut, from his participation in the college’s
Dance Marathon to collecting food and clothing for various charities. In 2009, he and his fellow fraternity brothers “adopted” three families for Christmas. “The adoption included the collection of money and a group shopping trip to get gifts,” he says. “One of the families was able to make it to campus to have an early Christmas with us. Twenty-nine Brothers crowded around the Christmas tree in our chapter room to give gifts to a mother and her teenage son. The family was so grateful to be a part of our Theta Chi Christmas, and to know that we were responsible for giving three families a better holiday put a smile on my face.”
Future Plans Lynch isn’t sure what path he’ll pursue after graduation. “I have some time to think about that,” he says. “But this summer I might have an internship with the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI), or an internship on the Quantico Marine base. I am hoping that either of them will help build a bridge to a bright future. My uncle also owns a landscaping company in Maine, which might stay in the family, and that’s another possibility.”
