BOA Chair Charles Moncure '82, Pepper Laughon '59 and President Robert Lindgren |
The Randolph-Macon College Board of Associates (BOA) presented its Entrepreneur Achievement award to Frank E. “Pepper” Laughon Jr. ’59 on Thursday, November 12, 2009. The award was announced during the R-MC Macon Connections professional networking event held at The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, Virginia.
Laughon is the first recipient of the entrepreneur award, which was established to recognize highly successful R-MC alumni who transform a vision into a viable and sustainable business enterprise. Award recipients demonstrate the ability to envision a unique or highly improved concept and bring that concept to an extraordinary outcome. This usually involves motivating a team toward the same end.
“Pepper’s actions and achievements throughout the years best exemplify the traits of a successful, driven entrepreneur,” said BOA Chairman Charles Moncure ’82. “His generosity in the community and civic leadership epitomizes the quintessential Randolph-Macon graduate.”
Laughon is the chairman and CEO of Richmond Cold Storage, a company that operates twelve refrigerated and dry storage warehouses along the Mid-Atlantic States. He is also founder and president of Flare Corporation, an international consulting firm for refrigerated warehousing and distribution. Laughon is also very active at R-MC and serves on the Board of Trustees, Student Affairs Committee, the Athletic Committee and as Chair of the Greek Alumni Advisory Board. In 2003, he and his wife Stuart established the Pepper and Stuart Laughon Commitment to Community Award, which is presented annually to an R-MC student organization or individual making significant contributions to enrich the lives of others.
The R-MC Macon Connections professional networking events are held four times annually and provide students, alumni and the public the opportunity to share business cards and network about career opportunities over coffee and a breakfast buffet. R-MC President Robert R. Lindgren gives an update on the latest news and events happening at the college. The keynote speaker for the November event was R-MC Head Football Coach Pedro Arruza, who also answered questions from those in attendance.
