Randolph-Macon Volleyball Claims First ODAC Championship 3-1 over Roanoke
ROANOKE, VA – Behind 15 kills from Tournament Most Outstanding Player Raena Winton, the Randolph-Macon volleyball claimed its first ODAC Championship in school history with a 3-1 victory over Roanoke Saturday afternoon.
R-MC improves to 28-6 overall, which sets a new school record for wins in a season. R-MC earns the ODAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament that will begin on Thursday at a site and against an opponent to be determined. The NCAA is scheduled to announce the pairing on Monday morning.
The Yellow Jackets won game one by the score of 25-23, took game two 25-16, had championship point in game three, but RC rallied to win 24-26, but they were able to close out the Maroons in game four 25-18 to take the championship.
Joining Winton (Magnolia, TX/Waller) on the offensive leaders was fellow all-tournament selection Mallory Carter (Moseley, VA/ Cosby) who had 10 kills, while Jessica Sears (Newport News, VA/Menchville) added eight in the victory. Courtney Anderson (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial) dished out 36 assists and Sam Block (Charlottesville, VA/Albermarle) had 14 helpers as well.
Carter and Sears each had 22 digs defensively, while all-tournament choice Jill Kubichan (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge) had 21 stops as well. April Hines (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond River) had four serving aces and the Jackets won 25 points on her serves during the match. Carter also had three aces.
R-MC earned a spot in the championship match with a 3-0 semifinal win over Bridgewater earlier in the day. The Jackets won 25-14, 25-20 and 25-16. Winton and Carter had 11 and seven kills, respectively. Anderson had 22 assists and Hines had six total blocks defensively.
