Randolph-Macon College President Robert R. Lindgren announced that the college will receive a $500,000 grant from the BB&T Charitable Foundation. The grant will be used to expand the study of ethics, economics and capitalism through a broadened curriculum, faculty and student research, internships and one-on-one interaction with business leaders.
“Through the support of this generous grant from BB&T, we will be in a position to enhance this exceptional program and provide our students with a set of ethical tools and analytic training to use while at R-MC and in their lives after college,” said Lindgren. “We are extremely grateful for BB&T’s support of our mission and for their endorsement of our liberal arts curriculum.”
The economics and business major is the largest at Randolph-Macon College. R-MC offers students the additional opportunity of joining a rapidly growing ethics minor program which can provide students a framework to study the relationship between economics and ethical inquiry. This BB&T grant will enable R-MC faculty to meet this growing demand while providing students a clearer view of the principles underlying our nation’s market economic system.
“Our students become inspired when they interact with business leaders and are exposed to leading economists,” says economics and business department chair David Brat, Ph.D. “This is an exciting opportunity for Randolph-Macon College to expand our offerings and encourage students to apply ethical reasoning within our majors, the ethics minor and throughout the curriculum. It is very clear to many who follow markets that an examination of the moral foundations of capitalism is essential to understanding our system of free markets.”
BB&T Corporation is the 10th largest financial services holding company headquartered in the United States with $152.4 billion in assets. Its bank subsidiaries operate approximately 1,500 financial centers in the Carolinas, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Georgia, Maryland, Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, Indiana and Washington, D.C. BB&T annual charitable contributions totaled nearly $20 million in 2008.
