Randolph-Macon College students competed in the Collegiate Forensics Association’s fall tournament at Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, on October 16 and 17, 2009.
R-MC Professor Ted Sheckels, Ph.D., the A.G. Ingram Professor of English, coaches the R-MC forensics students. Sheckels is a communications studies and English professor and the director of speaking for the Higgins Academic Center. Professor Sheckels is assisted by part-time communication studies instructor John Mingus.
“The team got its season off to a good start,” Sheckels said. “Both veteran and new team members contributed significantly to a R-MC performance that suggests that this year’s glory will be shared by many.”
R-MC won 1st place (Samantha Bradshaw ’10 and Crystal Thomas ’13), 4th place (Becky Johnsen ’10) and 5th place (Robert Thomas ’11 and Ethan Franz ’12) in debate. In addition, a team composed of R-MC student Jessee Perry ’11 and an emergency replacement from the University of Richmond won 2nd place. R-MC's overall record was 14-6. Samantha Bradshaw was the #1 debater in the tournament, Crystal Thomas was #3 and Vi Mai ’12 was #6.
In informative speaking, Becky Johnsen won 1st place and Jessee Perry won 2nd place. In after-dinner speaking, Jessee Perry won first place. Ethan Franz won second place in dramatic interpretation and Michelle Nieporte ’13 won third place. In addition, Robert Thomas won 5th in prose and 5th in poetry, Becky Johnsen won 6th in poetry, Ethan Franz won 6th in impromptu, and Vi Mai won 6th in persuasive speaking. “These students were all debuting pieces, and, in a few cases, trying out new events,” said Sheckels. “Their performances, whether first and second or fifth and sixth, suggest that this year’s team has a great deal of potential.”
Students who compete in five events also compete in pentathlon. Jessee Perry was #2 in pentathlon; Becky Johnsen was #5.
Overall, R-MC finished in 2nd Place, just a few points behind the leader.
