R-MC students can find information about résumé-writing, career-related workshops, internships, graduate school and more in the College’s
Career Services Office, located in the Career and Counseling Center, in the Birdsong Peaks of Excellence Center in Thomas Branch Hall.
Career Services is dedicated to preparing students for success after graduation by providing personalized programs and services designed to support self-identity and interpersonal growth.
“We want students to feel comfortable coming to us for assistance,” says Director of Career Services Cathy Rollman. “We help students define and fine-tune their career goals and assist them as they prepare for life after college.”
The Career Services Office strives to offer a variety of programs in which students can participate. One such example is the new
Access CEO program. Co-founded by Rollman and Robert Patterson, director of corporate and foundation relations, Access CEO is a unique team-based mentoring program for juniors and seniors that provides an opportunity for ambitious students to come together and learn from seasoned top local executives and from one another.
“Access CEO connects students with senior leaders in the Greater Richmond area,” says Rollman. “Linking students and successful business leaders together is a terrific way to exchange information. Students gain a better understanding of business and career opportunities, and professionals can see through fresh eyes the challenges that young adults face as they identify and search for a ‘good fit’ in the corporate world.”
The Career Services Web site includes an events calendar as well as other tools to assist with the internship, employment and graduate-school process. New this year, students will have access to an in-house job database, which contains job postings from employers who have specifically expressed interest in recruiting at Randolph-Macon. Students who utilize Career Services will have access to a wide range of resources and employment opportunities.
Housed in the Career and Counseling Center, the
Bassett Internship Program is dedicated to providing a real-world backdrop for future academic learning, as well as preparation for life after graduation. With a history of placements in over 1,100 sites in more than 20 states, Washington, D.C., and 11 foreign countries, students get an opportunity to explore the world of work.
The Bassett Internship Program offers both academic and non-academic internships, as described below:
Academic Internships: Allow a student to earn academic credit (3 hours) and a grade by conducting a non-paid internship through a Randolph-Macon course. The program is open to juniors and seniors from all academic departments who hold an overall GPA of 2.25 or higher. These placements are coordinated through academic departments.
Paid Internships: Paid internships are open to the general student population and will aid with obtaining entry-level employment opportunities. These internships are coordinated through the Career Services Office.
Additional Programs: • Public service/non-profit internships • Volunteer internships • A. Purnell Bailey pre-ministerial internships
• The Disney College Program • Summer on-campus housing program
“Internships grant students the opportunity to learn about the world of work,” says Professor Ed Showalter, Ph.D., the director of the Bassett Internship Program. “Students can test the waters and also build a strong network within and outside of the Randolph-Macon community.”
New this year is
CAREER 15, a unique resource that connects students and graduates of 15 respected Virginia liberal arts colleges with human resources staff looking for potential interns and employees. It was created by the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC) to expand the career opportunities of students attending one of its member colleges.
CAREER 15's main feature is a gateway Web site accessed at
www.career15.com. This password-protected environment allows students and graduates to file résumés, research top-tier companies and view job postings.
