Three hundred and seventy-two freshmen, 32 transfer students and 5 exchange students arrived at Randolph-Macon College on Thursday, August 27, 2009. This year, new students once again received an extra-special welcome by a group called the Macon Movers, which is comprised of nearly 100 R-MC students, faculty and staff members. Macon Movers helped direct incoming students and their families around campus and helped students move into their dorm rooms.
“Macon Movers received training before freshmen moved in and they learned the best ways to help assist incoming students during this exciting transition,” said Rodney Bardwell, director of residence life and housing. “It’s a great opportunity to bring together the campus community and help new students feel at home.”
Matt Musser ’12 was assisted by Macon Movers last year, and this year he helped new students set up their dorms. “The Macon Movers team made my move to R-MC a good experience for me last year because it allowed me to meet other students on campus who knew what I was going through,” says Musser. “Being a freshman and not knowing anyone can be difficult, but the Macon Movers team answered my questions and steered me in the right direction.”
Musser, who hails from Mechanicsville, Virginia, can empathize with the challenges new freshmen may face as they get to know their new surroundings. “I decided to be a Macon Mover this year because I want the incoming freshmen to feel comfortable,” he says. “I know what they are going through—the excitement of being in college and the fear of the unknown.”
