“When I entered Randolph-Macon College I came searching for a career in law and politics,” says
R-MC senior James Murray '09. “I was surprised to find that my love for theater quickly turned into my collegiate lifestyle. Instead of taking classes on political thought and campaign processes I was spending hours in Cobb Theatre, exploring drama and art.”
Murray, whose
drama major reflects four years of heavy involvement in R-MC’s theater scene, participated in some way with every production that Randolph-Macon has presented in the past four years. “I have acted in over twenty shows and have been involved with more than thirty,” he says. Murray will also graduate with a major in English and a minor in music.

He is a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Fraternity and Mu Phi Epsilon Professional Music Fraternity. He was also the recipient of the European Council of International Schools’ Award for International Understanding.
Murray has been actively involved in many of the college’s academic offerings, clubs and organizations. He has participated in the college’s unique Schapiro Undergraduate Research Fellowship (
SURF) program twice and studied abroad in England in conjunction with the January Term (
J-term) course,
The Arts in London. He has been a member of R-MC’s Franklin Debating Society since 2005 and currently serves as president. Murray has won more than 35 awards as a competitive speaker and debater for the Society.
Murray is a member of the Drama Guild and has been a writer for the student newspaper,
The Yellow Jacket, since 2005. He also served as class president of the Student Government Association and has been an active participant in the college’s Quality Enhancement Program leadership team.
Murray’s post-commencement plans will take him far from his native Manchester, Michigan. “My life took an unexpected and completely welcome turn when I was invited to Moscow, Russia to pursue a career in film industry,” he says. “I'm not sure how much time I'll spend abroad, but I am certain that the experience will change my life.”
“The model of the liberal arts is a genuinely useful—vital perhaps—form of education for our rapidly fluctuating world,” says Murray. “My time at Randolph-Macon has been a period of intense self-exploration and discovery. I now know who I am, what I love and what I am going to do. Because of Randolph-Macon College, because of my liberal arts education, I now feel—I now know—that I can do anything.”
