Joseph Boardman, the newly-appointed CEO of Amtrak, will be the guest speaker at a community meeting sponsored by the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce (GRCC) on Thursday, May 28, 2009.
This event, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 7:30 – 9:30 a.m. at Randolph-Macon College, in Blackwell Auditorium, Center for the Performing Arts. Randolph-Macon College President Robert R. Lindgren, who serves on the advisory board of the Virginians for High Speed Rail, will co-host the event.
This event presents an opportunity to discuss high-speed rail between Washington, D.C. and Richmond, VA. John Lewis, the CEO of The Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC) will also talk about the bus transfer center GRTC plans for Main Street Station located in downtown Richmond.
The National Railroad Passenger Corporation Board of Directors announced the appointment of Boardman in November 2008. Boardman is a nationally recognized transportation industry professional who has nearly 34 years of experience in the surface transportation industry at city, county, state and federal government levels.
Until his recent appointment, Boardman served as administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), a position he held since April 2005. He was also the Department of Transportation designee on the Amtrak board of directors. Prior to his tenure at FRA, he served as commissioner of the New York State Department of Transportation beginning in July of 1997.
Virginians for High Speed Rail (VHSR) is a private, not-for-profit, statewide education and advocacy group that supports modern higher-speed passenger rail and transit solutions to relieve highway congestion, augment limited and costly air travel and to overcome other inhibitors of regional competitiveness, convenience and quality of life.
