Randolph-Macon College President Robert R. Lindgren and Provost William Johnston are pleased to announce the tenure and/or promotion of six faculty members who were approved during the spring meeting of the R-MC Board of Trustees.
“These exceptional faculty members are truly deserving of this formal recognition of their talent, scholarship and dedication,” said Johnston. “I join the Randolph-Macon College community in congratulating and thanking them for their outstanding contributions.”
The following professor has been granted tenure:
Dr. John Thoburn, associate professor of chemistry, joined the faculty at Randolph-Macon College in 2003. Dr. Thoburn earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and German from Haverford College and a master’s and Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California, San Diego.
The following professors have earned tenure and promotion to Associate Professor:
Dr. Denise Bissler, assistant professor of sociology, joined the faculty at Randolph-Macon College in 2003. Dr. Bissler earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in sociology from the University of Akron, and a Ph.D. in sociology and anthropology from North Carolina State University.
Dr. Todd Munson, assistant professor of Asian Studies, joined the faculty at Randolph-Macon College in 2003. Dr. Munson earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, a master’s in East Asian Studies from Indiana University, Bloomington and a Ph.D. in Japanes

The following faculty members have been promoted from Associate Professor to Full Professor:
Dr. Thomas Badey, associate professor of political science, joined the faculty at Randolph-Macon College in 1998. Dr. Badey earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Maryland, a master’s degree in political science from the University of South Florida and a Ph.D. in political science from the Ruprecht-Karls Universitaet in Heidelberg, Germany.
Dr. David Brat, associate professor of economics/business, joined the R-MC faculty in 1996. Dr. Brat earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration at Hope College, a Master of Divinity in philosophy and theology from Princeton Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. in economics from The American University.
The following faculty member has been promoted from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor:
Dr. Jennifer Bruce, director of instruction for the Higgins Academic Center and assistant professor of education, joined the faculty at Randolph-Macon College in 1999. Dr. Bruce earned a bachelor’s degree in English and speech from Murray State University, a Master’s of Education in mental retardation from the University of Louisville and a Ph.D. in education from Virginia Commonwealth University.
