Faculty, staff, students, friends and family members gathered in the Thomas Branch atrium at the 4th annual Student Leadership Awards Reception on Wednesday, May 6, 2009. The ceremony honored recipients of the Student Leadership and Student Organizations Awards, given to individual students who demonstrated excellence in co-curricular leadership endeavors, and to student organizations that make exceptional contributions to the Randolph-Macon community. The Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society and the Order of Omega Leadership Honor Society also lauded their newly inducted members at the event.
Eight individuals were presented with The Student Leadership Award:First Year Emerging Leader—Ajiri Revels ’12 and Charles Kesner ’12
Second Year Emerging Leader—Katherine Gray ’11 and Brandon Alwan ’11
Junior Leadership Award—Baylee Smith ’10 and Seth Haley ’10
Senior Leadership Award—Kate Savage ’09 and Joel Bolton ’09
Four student organizations were also honored: Best Newcomer Award—Sisters Serving in Pink (now known as the Tau Delta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.)

The Student Organization of the Year Award went to Macon Peer Response (MPR).
Top awards of the night included the Senior Leadership Awards and the Student Organization of the Year Award.
Kate Savage '09 received a Senior Leadership Award. Savage is a member of the Delta Zeta sorority and has worked with the Senior Class Gift Committee. She also served as the executive director of the 2009 Macon Miracles Dance Marathon. Savage is an international studies major with a minor in communication studies. She was recently honored at the college’s annual Empower Luncheon and was presented with the Woman of Excellence award, which honors students who have worked to contribute to advancing the status of women on campus, and who demonstrate leadership, vitality and integrity in their lives on or off campus.
Joel Bolton ’09 also received a Senior Leadership Award and was lauded for his many roles on campus. Bolton, a psychology major from Manassas, Virginia, has performed community service work with the college’s Brothers 4 Change organization. He is a member of the Judicial Board and the Academic Integrity Student Committee, and he has worked for the Yellow Jacket, the college’s student newspaper.
Bolton also worked as a tour guide, is on the Senior Class Gift Committee and played intramural dodge ball, volleyball and flag football while at R-MC. “Receiving the leadership award was confirmation that hard work and dedication are met with sincere recognition at R-MC,” says Bolton. “I had no idea I was going to be nominated, and winning was even more of a surprise, which made me look back at my involvement and achievements with a smile.”
Bolton plans to work with his father this summer and then continue with his studies. “After the summer I’ll be applying to graduate school in Cape Town, South Africa,” he says. “I’ll be working on my master’s degree in social psychology.”
Macon Peer Response, the Student Organization of the Year Award Recipient, was honored for encouraging healthy relationships on campus through their work as sexual and relationship violence peer advocates.
