The annual Fraternity and Sorority Life Awards ceremony took place on Sunday, April 26, 2009 in Blackwell Auditorium. Thirty students were inducted into one of three societies: the Order of Omega Greek Leadership Society, the Gamma Sigma Alpha Greek Academic Society and the Rho Lambda Panhellenic Leadership Society. In addition, more than 20 awards were presented to individual students, fraternities and sororities.
James McGhee, director of student development and Student Government Association adviser, congratulated students for their hard work and philanthropic causes. “R-MC fraternity and sorority chapters performed over 2,500 hours of community service in 2008,” said McGhee. “Each fraternity and sorority makes a commitment to service, and through your hard work you’ve made real connections with the community.”
Randolph-Macon College President Robert R. Lindgren was one of the presenters at the awards ceremony. “Each year, our fraternities and sororities are given standards that we expect them to meet or exceed,” said Lindgren. “These standards are found in the Chapter of Excellence Agreement. These standards are not easy to complete, but when a chapter does complete them, they are prepared to live their ritual, operate a sound chapter and in general be successful in fraternity and sorority life.
Lindgren presented seven Greek organizations with the Chapter of Superior Achievement award, the highest honor that can be awarded to a chapter at Randolph-Macon College: Kappa Alpha Order, Kappa Sigma, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Alpha Gamma Delta, Delta Zeta, Kappa Alpha Theta and Phi Mu. “I am very pleased that so many of our chapters put the work in to rise above the standard,” said Lindgren.
R-MC fraternities and sororities raised more than $10,000 for various philanthropic causes in 2008. “Our fraternity and sorority system continues to grow and flourish with support from active members, alumni and dedicated advisers,” said McGhee. “Fraternity and sorority members can be involved in the life of the college in very significant ways.”
