The Randolph-Macon College Board of Trustees elected a new chairman during its spring meeting on Saturday, May 2, 2009. Their unanimous choice was long-time Trustee, Alan B. Rashkind ’69, of Norfolk, Virginia. He succeeds Macon F. Brock, Jr. ’64 who stepped down after serving as chair for ten years.
“This is a proud day for Randolph-Macon College,” said President Robert Lindgren. “Alan Rashkind’s love for the College motivates him to help our programs be the best they can be. He is a great choice to continue the amazing legacy of strong leaders of our board at R-MC, including Macon Brock, Beverley Dalton and John Clements.”
Rashkind has been a dedicated R-MC Trustee since 1991, but his support for the College goes back to the 1960’s when he was a student. As a student, he was elected to Pi Gamma Mu (social science honor society); Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership honor society); Pi Delta Epsilon (honorary journalism fraternity) and was elected president of his social fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi). He was also captain of the R-MC Debate Team, president of the Council of Fraternity Presidents, and listed in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities.
Rashkind has remained an active alumnus and is a member of the Presidents Society, served on the Society of Alumni Board, of which he was president from 1987-89, and was chair of his 25th Class Reunion Committee. In addition, Alan and his wife Suzette have supported many causes at R-MC, including the Rashkind Faculty Grant program, which was originally set up by his parents and the Rashkind Family Foundation. Rashkind’s dedication to R-MC has been a beacon for his family who also became strong supporters of the college. Rashkind’s father, Julian, is a Trustee Emeritus at R-MC, while his brother, Michael ’71 (who served on the Board of Associates); son, Graham’96 (who serves on the Board of the Society of Alumni); and daughter-in-law, Cameron’94 are all graduates of the College.
Currently, Rashkind is a member of the Furniss, Davis, Rashkind and Saunders law firm in Norfolk, Virginia, where he has been since his graduation from law school. He specializes in defense of civil litigation and insurance coverage matters, including personal injury, lawyer's malpractice and municipal and federal civil rights cases.
Outside of the courtroom, Rashkind is an adjunct professor at the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary and serves on the faculty of the Virginia State Bar Professionalism Course. He is co-author of the leading Virginia text on insurance law.
A successful attorney, Rashkind has been listed in Best Lawyers in America for over 10 years, has been listed in Virginia Super Lawyers since it began publishing, and has been elected a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the American Bar Foundation, and the Virginia Law Foundation. Rashkind is also a founding board member and past Chair of the Board of Chesapeake Bay Academy in Virginia Beach, a private non-profit K-12 school for students with learning differences.
Rashkind earned a B.A. from Randolph-Macon in 1969 and his J.D. from the University of Virginia in 1972. He and wife, Suzette, have two sons, Graham’96 and Douglas.
