Randolph-Macon College is pleased to announce that the Board of Trustees unanimously elected alumni Allison McCabe O’Brien’77 and Dr. George A. Trivette’76 to serve on the R-MC Board of Trustees. They will each begin their four-year term starting in October 2009.
R-MC President Robert Lindgren recognized each of these individuals as “outstanding members of the Randolph-Macon community.” He said, “the contributions they’ve made to this terrific College have had an immeasurable impact on the lives of our students. They are shining examples of how to lead by example and we are indeed fortunate and grateful to have them join our Board.”
Allison McCabe O’Brien’77 is the business development manager for Long & Foster's relocation division in Richmond, Virginia. She earned a B.A. in psychology from R-MC and was later hired as assistant director of admission, a position she held at the college for six years.
While attending Randolph-Macon, O’Brien was actively engaged in the life of the college. She was a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa national honorary fraternity and played on the women’s basketball team. O’Brien was also student director of Women’s Intramurals, a student member of the Athletic Council for two years, and a student director of the Student Admissions Committee.
O’Brien continues to dedicate her time to the college. She currently serves as a member of the R-MC Board of Associates, Society of Alumni board, the Presidents Society and the Heritage Society. In addition, the Alumni Recruitment Team known as “ART” was created under her direction and leadership. Previously, O’Brien served on the Yellow Jackets Club Board and on committees for the reunion, the Hall of Fame and Annual Fund. In 2007, she was presented with the Society of Alumni Distinguished Service Award.
Her volunteer work also extends beyond Randolph-Macon. O’Brien is also active in the greater Richmond community where she was named Volunteer of the Year, Pink Ribbon Classic by the American Cancer Society in 2001. She also sits on the Board of Directors for the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce.
O’Brien lives in Richmond with her husband, fellow alumnus, L. Reed O’Brien’78. They have two children, Greg and Kathryn.
Dr. George A. Trivette’76 is a partner with Radiation Oncology Associates in Richmond, Virginia. He is board certified in Therapeutic Radiology. He is the Medical Director of the Radiation Oncology Department for St. Mary's Hospital for the past 17 years and Medical Director of Bon Secours Cancer Institute Radiation Oncology Centers in Richmond. Previously, he spent seven years as an army physician at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC.
Trivette is a member of the the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology. He has published on topics related to radiation oncology. He is an advocate for a holistic approach to cancer care.
While attending Randolph-Macon, Trivette wrote for the Yellow Jacket student newspaper and was active in the Student Government Association as Class President his first two years and then Vice President of Student Government. He was elected to Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Delta Theta and earned a B.A. in religious studies from R-MC in 1976. Trivette then enrolled at Eastern Virginia Medical School, where he earned a M.D. in 1982. He trained in Radiation Oncology at the National Cancer Institute. Currently, he is a member of the Presidents Society at Randolph-Macon.
Dr. Trivette’s wife, alumna Janet Harvey Trivette’78, lost her courageous fight against cancer in November 2007. In her honor, and with the help of family and hundreds of friends, Trivette established the Janet Harvey Trivette award, which is given annually to an R-MC student, and the Janet Harvey Trivette Alumni Walkway, which winds throughout R-MC’s historic campus in her honor. This brick walkway will ultimately contain the names of every R-MC graduate beginning in the early 1900’s.
Dr. Trivette lives in Richmond and has two sons, Proctor’07 and Alex who attends Georgetown University.
