On Saturday, April 18, 2009, Randolph-Macon students and the Town of Ashland paid homage to Earth Day by celebrating Macon a Difference Day. Dozens of volunteers helped clean and beautify the R-MC campus and Ashland’s parks, schoolyards, streams and businesses.
Macon a Difference Day is an annual campus-wide initiative that brings together the college’s clubs, organizations and academic and administrative departments. Students, staff and faculty volunteer their time and energy and at the same time make connections with the Ashland community by working toward a common goal.
R-MC students and the Town of Ashland joined forces as volunteers spread mulch, plant flowers, clean up trash and more. This year’s projects included cleaning up Mechumps creek, creating a sustainable Maya community garden plot next to R-MC’s Sociology House and working on a fish habitat at Ashland’s DeJarnette Park.
Macon a Difference Day began in 2006 and each year the scope of its Earth-centric projects has increased.
“This year's event was tremendously successful," said Christina Brown, assistant director of residence life and housing at R-MC. "When students participate in Macon a Difference Day they are able to facilitate positive social change within their community and grow from the experience. Giving back to the local community is important and I am happy that the steering committee was able to coordinate this event so our students can get involved. It is the volunteers who really make this event so special.”
