Political Science Professor Brian Turner, Ph.D., was recently elected secretary of the Assembly of State for the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) Conferences. The AAUP is a faculty membership organization that develops the standards and procedures that maintain quality education and academic freedom in colleges and universities in the United States.
The Assembly of State Conferences is a structure within the national association of AAUP that supports the development and activities of various AAUP state conferences. Turner was elected secretary at the national meeting in Washington in June 2008; he will serve on the executive committee, which approves requests for support from the states and develops programs to assist state conferences.
Turner, who has taught at R-MC since 1996, joined AAUP in 1992. He served as chapter president at Randolph-Macon from 1997-2003 and president of the Virginia Conference from 2006-2008. Turner currently chairs the national Government Relations Committee and serves on the Elections Committee. He earned his B.A. from The University of South Carolina at Columbia, his M.A. from the University of Denver and his Ph.D. from Tulane University.
In 2002, Turner and his late wife Christina founded the Higher Education Advocacy Day at the Virginia General Assembly, in which faculty members from across the state come to Richmond to meet with legislators. Christina Turner served as president of the Virginia Conference at the time.
