More than 3,000 people attended the Ashland 150th Grand Celebration which was held on the campus of Randolph-Macon College on Saturday, October 18, 2008 from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The celebration kicked off at R-MC’s Day Field with a performance by the Hanover All-County Marching Band, made up of all four of the county’s high schools. An opening ceremony followed which included the singing of the town song, “Ashland, Ashland,” a time capsule presentation, unveiling of the birthday cake sculpture and the singing of “Happy Birthday.” At the conclusion of the ceremony, everyone was invited to walk over to Fountain Plaza where they enjoyed samples from 150 birthday cakes made by many local bakers.
Randolph-Macon College president, Robert Lindgren and Ashland Mayor Faye Prichard were honorary co-chairs of this historic event. There were plenty of activities for everyone to enjoy including Radio Disney! for the children, food vendors, an exhibit hall, and musical performances ranging from bluegrass to Motown.
