Randolph-Macon College president Robert Lindgren announces the award of three endowed professorships which will be presented at a ceremony to be held on Friday, October 24, 2008 at 3:10 p.m. in the McGraw-Page Library.
These presentations represent one of the highest honors the College can bestow on members of its faculty to recognize them for exemplary teaching and scholarship.
Charles Gowan, Ph.D., is awarded the Paul H. Wornom, M.D., Professorship in Biological Sciences. Dr. Gowan joined the faculty in 1996 and is a professor in the department of biology and environmental studies program, director of the College’s First-Year Experience program and serves on the Committee on Admissions, Credits, and Academic Status of Students. He has authored 35 articles and reports in technical, government and academic journals. Dr. Gowan earned his Bachelor’s degree from State University of New York, his Master’s from Michigan State University, and his Ph.D. from Colorado State University.
The Paul H. Wornom, M.D., Professorship in Biological Sciences was established in 1999 by Dr. Paul Wornom ’37. It recognizes a senior member of the biology department for exemplary teaching and scholarship. Dr. Wornom is a retired family practice physician who specialized in allergies, arthritis and immunology. In 2006, he also established a scholarship which is awarded to students interested in careers in medicine. He is a member of R-MC’s Presidents Society and the Heritage Society.
Kelly Lambert, Ph.D., is the first recipient of the Macon and Joan Brock Professorship in Psychology. Dr. Lambert joined the faculty in 1989 and is chair of the department of psychology and co-director of the Schapiro Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program. In 2007, she was awarded the Samuel Nelson Gray Distinguished Professor Award at R-MC and in 2001, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award.
Nationally recognized for her research accomplishments in the area of neuroscience, Dr. Lambert has authored two books and numerous articles in professional journals. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Samford University and her Master’s and Ph.D. from the University of Georgia, Athens, GA.
The Macon and Joan Brock Professorship in Psychology was established in 2008 by Macon ’64 and Joan Brock. It recognizes a senior member of the psychology department for exemplary teaching and scholarship. Macon Brock is co-founder of Dollar Tree Stores, was CEO until 2004 and is currently chairman of their Board of Directors. He is also chair of the R-MC Board of Trustees and is a member of the Presidents Society and Heritage Society. Joan Brock is a 1964 graduate of Longwood College. She serves on the board of trustees for Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, VA, Tidewater Scholarship Foundation and Virginia Wesleyan College.
Theodore F. Sheckels, Ph.D., is awarded the A.G. Ingram Professorship in English. Dr. Sheckels joined the faculty at R-MC in 1980 and is a professor of English and Communication and director of speaking across the curriculum at R-MC. He directs both the college’s communication studies and film studies program. A nationally-recognized expert on Commonwealth literature and political rhetoric, he is also the academic advisor of the historic Franklin Debating Society, which was founded in 1832, founding editor of Margaret Atwood Studies and president of the American Association of Australian Literary Studies. Dr. Sheckels has authored eight books and numerous articles in professional journals. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Duquesne University and his Master’s and Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University.
The A.G. Ingram Professorship in English was established in 1998 by A.G. Ingram ’61. It recognizes a senior member of the department of English for exemplary teaching and scholarship. A.G. Ingram ’61 retired in 1998 after 30 years with Wheat First Union. He is now co-owner of Ingram Construction Company in Rocky Mount, NC. He is a member of the R-MC Board of Associates, Presidents Society and the Heritage Society.
Endowed professorships are made possible through gifts of at least $1 million and broaden teaching and research opportunities for distinguished faculty members. Randolph-Macon College currently has nine endowed professorships.
