Mathematics professors Dr. Bruce Torrence and Dr. Eve Torrence have completed a second edition of their well-received book,
The Student’s Introduction to Mathematica. The book is slated for release in September 2008.
The new edition is completely re-written to take advantage of the dynamic interface elements in version 6 of Mathematica. It includes chapters on algebra, calculus, multivariate calculus and linear algebra. The book focuses on how students can most effectively use the software package, and includes a new chapter on programming. New also are hundreds of exercises, which permit students to practically apply what they learn.
Bruce Torrence joined the faculty of Randolph-Macon College in 1993 and currently serves as chair of the mathematics department. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Tufts University and a master’s degree from the University of Maryland, as well as a Ph.D. from University of Virginia. Torrence is co-editor elect of Math Horizons, the Mathematical Association of America's journal for undergraduates. The organization recently presented him with the John M. Smith award for excellence in mathematics teaching for the Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC area.
Eve Torrence joined the faculty of Randolph-Macon College in 1994. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Tufts University and a master’s and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. She is president elect of Pi Mu Epsilon, the national mathematics honor society. In 2007 she was co-recipeint (with colleague Adrian Rice) of the MAA’s Trevor Evans award for excellence in mathematical exposition.
