ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph-Macon College men's basketball team is set to take South America by storm on its "2008 R-MC Friends of Basketball Chilean Tour." The Yellow Jackets are scheduled to leave for Santiago, Chile on Tuesday August 5th, and return Monday, August 18th.
The thirteen returning team members for 2008-09 will be making the trip, along with head coach Mike Rhoades and assistant coach JD Byers.
Paul Gartlan '81 is R-MC's sponsor for the trip along with Randolph-Macon Friends of Basketball. He founded the "Encestando Una Sonrisa", which is the grand tournament in Santiago in which the Yellow Jackets will participate during the week. All proceeds from the tournament go towards funding Chilean children in need of kidney transplants. There are seven other teams in the tournament, including squads from Chile, Argentina, and Brasil.
The Yellow Jackets will begin their tour on August 7th with an exhibition against Universidad Catolica in Santiago. The Jackets will then travel to Vina Del Mar to take part in a four-team tournament on August 8th and 9th. R-MC then heads to Santa Cruz for a contest on August 10th, before returning to Santiago for a game with Universidad de las Americas on August 12th.
Encestando Una Sonrisa kicks off on Wednesday, August 13th and goes through Sunday, August 17th. The Jackets will play four games in five days prior to returning to the United States on August 18th.
