Mary Polce-Lynch, Ph.D., has been awarded a Congressional Fellowship by the American Psychological Association (APA).
APA sponsors fellows in the Congressional Fellows program of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). This one-year fellowship allows for the study of science and public policy. Fellows are selected from a nationally competitive pool and must demonstrate the ability to apply psychological knowledge to the solution of societal problems and show interest in public policy issues. Polce-Lynch will be placed with a member from the House of Representatives, Senate, or a Congressional Committee, serving as a special legislative assistant.
Activities may involve assisting in congressional hearings and debates; preparing briefs and writing speeches; conducting legislative or oversight work; and meeting with lobbyists. Fellows also present about their experiences at APA's National Convention.
Polce-Lynch is a visiting assistant professor of psychology at Randolph-Macon and serves as the associate director of the college’s counseling center. She began her work at R-MC in 1991. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in special education from Marywood College; Master’s and Ed.S. degrees in counseling psychology and school psychology respectively from James Madison University; and a Ph.D. in developmental psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University. She will find out in September 2008 the details of her congressional placement.
