234 seniors graduated from Randolph-Macon College on Saturday, May 31,
2008 at the Frank E. Brown Fountain Plaza. The Class of 2008 followed the tradition
of marching across the “Red Brick Road,” where each of their names is imprinted
on a brick.
NBC’s Tim Russert delivered the 2008 commencement address which encouraged graduates
"to work hard, laugh often and keep your honor." During the ceremony, he was awarded
the honorary Doctor of Letters degree. Russert is the managing editor and moderator
of Meet the Press and political analyst for NBC Nightly News and The Today Show.
Additionally, he anchors The Tim Russert Show, a weekly interview program on MSNBC.
He also serves as senior vice-president and Washington bureau chief of NBC News.
Three other distinguished guests were also awarded honorary degrees: Dr. Charles
F. Bryan Jr., honorary Doctor of Letters degree, has served as president and CEO
of the Virginia Historical Society since 1988; Sue Forbes Watson, honorary Doctor
of Letters degree, has served on the Hanover County School Board for more than 30
years and is the co-founder of the Ashland Musical Variety Show; Walter W. Craigie
Jr., honorary Doctor of Laws degree, is a senior advisor with Morgan Keegan &
Company and previously served in the executive branch of the Commonwealth of Virginia
as Treasurer and Secretary of Finance.
This year’s senior speaker, Carter Augustine, took the Class of 2008 on a stroll
down memory lane and urged each one to remember the sense of family they built while
attending R-MC. In addition, the graduating class announced that it created a student-driven
fundraising campaign and donated over $7,975 to R-MC as its senior class gift. 61-percent
of the class participated in the donation setting a new record.
