Ashland, VA – Randolph-Macon College President Robert Lindgren has announced that Grant Azdell, Associate Vice President for Student Life at Lynchburg College, has been selected as the new Dean of Students at R-MC.
“The appointment of Grant Azdell is the product of a comprehensive search, and he received unanimous support from the Randolph-Macon community,” said Lindgren. “It is clear that he understands the importance of engaging our students in campus life and has an immediate understanding and respect for our culture, values and mission. I am confident that Grant will be an excellent addition to our Randolph-Macon family.” Lindgren also expressed his sincere appreciation to the interim dean of students, Kathryn Hull “for her outstanding leadership, support and dedication during the past year while she served as our interim dean.”
Azdell comes to R-MC from Lynchburg College where he has spent the past 10 years working and interacting with their student body in various capacities. He has served as Chaplain and Director of Church Relations, Dean of Religious Life, and most recently, Associate Vice President for Student Life. While serving in these roles, Azdell helped garner more than $950,000 in outside funding for special projects for the school. He also created and implemented several programs that enhanced student life on campus including a 24-hour on-call crisis management system and assisted in the creation of an emerging leaders program. Additionally, he currently serves on the Lynchburg College President’s cabinet, has taught classes in the areas of Religion and Education, serves as an academic advisor to freshmen, and also led a team of faculty and staff in establishing a new Minor in Leadership.
“I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead at Randolph-Macon College,” said Azdell. “I believe learning takes place both inside and outside of the classroom and that each person in a college community plays an invaluable role in that process. It is my goal to work with students, faculty, and staff to continue to enhance these opportunities and to celebrate our accomplishments.”
Azdell majored in both political science and religious studies and earned a B.A. from Lynchburg College and a Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt University. He is currently completing his Ph.D. in higher education administration with a minor in student affairs/development and leadership at University of Virginia.
Azdell and his wife, Jane, have two children, Andrew 12 and Caroline 9. He will begin his new career at Randolph-Macon College in mid-July.
