Four R-MC Pitchers Hurl Yellow Jackets to a 4-2 Win
over No. 11 Christopher Newport
ASHLAND, VA – Four Randolph-Macon pitchers combined to allow just five Christopher
Newport hits as the Yellow Jackets scored a 4-2 victory over its regional rival
on Thursday afternoon in Ashland.
Kurt Brietmeyer started and went the first five innings for R-MC, surrendering four
hits and two runs, while striking out three to improve his record to 3-1 on the
season.
Matt Tiller, Nick Simons and Dillion Sheads combined to allow just one hit over
the final four innings, setting down 11 of the final 12 Captains to come to the
plate. Sheads struck out the final CNU batter to record his second save of the season.
CNU (20-8), which is ranked 11th in the nation in the latest ABCA poll, pushed
across the first run of the game when Mike Giarrizzi singled to open the game and
moved to second on an Alex Owen single. Giarrizzi stole third and came home when
Jacket catcher Jay Lichter’s throw sailed into left field.
R-MC (18-11) struck back in the third inning, loading the bases then tying the game
on an RBI single by Greg Meleski. Sacrifice fly RBIs by Charlie Hartt and Mike Wallace
plated a pair of runs, giving the Jackets a 3-1 advantage.
The Captains made the score 3-2 in the fourth on a two-out RBI double off the bat
of Michael Romett that plated Parker Neal. That would be as close as CNU would get
as Ryan Dickerson scored Bruno Gora in R-MC’s next at bat to put the Yellow Jackets
up 4-2.
Christopher Newport starter David Acosta took the loss, dropping his record to 2-1
on the season. Acosta went 3.2 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Washington &
Lee University for a 1:00 ODAC doubleheader.
