Randolph-Macon College to Test Emergency Siren
Randolph-Macon College will test its emergency siren during a campus-wide
drill on Thursday, March 20, 2008 at 1:45 p.m.
R-MC’s Emergency Response Team has planned this test to educate the college community
on how to react when they hear this siren in the event of an emergency situation
on campus.
At 1:45 PM the siren will be turned on. When you hear the siren (an electronic wail
sound), seek shelter immediately.
- If you are inside, stay inside.
- If you are outside, immediately go inside a building
- You will not need to lock / barricade doors, close windows, etc. for this
drill. Simply remain inside the building.
- The siren may be silenced before it is safe to go outside. Do not go outside
until you hear the all clear tone - a steady tone lasting one minute.
- A text message and e-mail notice will be sent through
R-MC Alerts during the drill with further information.
We encourage all students, faculty, staff and parents to sign-up at
R-MC Alerts. If you have already signed-up, please check
the site to make sure your telephone number and e-mail address is still accurate.
This is also a good time to review
R-MC’s Emergency Response Overview and
R-MC’s Hostile Intruder Emergency Action Plan.
During Thursday’s test, the siren may be heard beyond the boundaries of the campus
in the immediate area. The R-MC Emergency Response Team is working closely with
members of the regional Campus Safety Taskforce which includes the Ashland Police
Department, Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, Hanover Fire/EMS and the Hanover Emergency
Communications Center to notify surrounding neighbors and businesses. The Ashland
Police Department is also working with the Hanover Sheriff’s Office to utilize the
“City Watch” system, a reverse 9-1-1 system which will notify the surrounding community
by telephone prior to the test. Emergency officials will also patrol the campus
and surrounding community during the test.
