Political Science
A political science major helps you develop the global perspective and critical thinking and analytical skills the future will demand.
From local to global: The political systems and ideas by which human societies seek to organize themselves are the focus of the political science major. From the basics of U.S. government to the complexities of issues such as foreign policy and terrorism, the political science curriculum brings together four unique but interrelated strands of study: American Politics, International Relations, Foreign and Comparative Politics, and Political Theory.
Internships: R-MC's convenient location near the state and national capitols allows students to participate in internships in the Virginia state legislature, the United Nations, or in government offices in Richmond or Washington, DC.
Respected faculty: Political science faculty bring experience to the classroom: the department includes a former Peace Corps volunteer, the editor of two major texts in the study of terrorism and of homeland security, and a former U.S. Supreme Court and Congressional Fellow.
Global learning: See the world through a different lens with study abroad at Wroxton College in England, the Sorbonne in France and the Irish College for the Humanities in Ireland.
Graduate studies and careers: Recent R-MC graduates have continued their studies at schools including Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, American University School of Public Affairs and University of Michigan Law School. And you'll find former R-MC students in fields such as foreign service and government, like Troy Lyons '05, currently a legislative assistant in the U.S. Senate. Other graduates are pursuing careers in cryptology, finance, law, business, marketing, mass communications, urban affairs and defense.

Greg Moffitt '12, who double majored in philosophy and political science, was the recipient of scholarships from the National Federation of the Blind of Virginia as well as the Lions Club. He was also a recipient of R-MC’s Presidential Scholarship. Additionally, Moffitt was an associate member of Ruritan National, a civic service organization made up of local clubs in urban areas, small towns and rural communities. In fall 2011 he volunteered at a fundraiser that his local chapter held in King George County, Virginia. On campus, he served in 2008 as president of the R-MC chapter of the College Republicans, and in 2011 he was a member of the college's Pre-Law Society. He is also a talented musician who plays music for his hometown church and has performed in concerts at various venues, including Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church.
