Music is often called the "universal language," a common bond shared across centuries and cultures. The diverse curriculum of the music program at Randolph-Macon College engages students in the rich breadth and depth of music through courses in performance, theory, history, and technology.
Music in depth: The music curriculum includes not only key foundation courses but also courses in music education, recording techniques and the music industry, along with topics such as the role of music in film and politics.
Music careers: Students interested in the Music Major can follow three slightly different
paths: Music Major, Music Education, or Arts Management with a Music Emphasis. For details on these programs consult the Course Catalog. Our graduates have gone on to careers in a variety of areas including music education, music therapy, music management, church music, and music retail. Others have gone on to graduate school in music, as well as in other fields.
Music performance: Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Ujima Gospel Choir, our partnership with the Hanover County Band, Pep Band and more—the music program encourages participation in R-MC's performing musical groups. Music major Susanna Carson '12, who plays the organ at a local church, also traveled with R-MC’s choir to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and France. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," she says, "singing in so many beautiful cathedrals with the choir."

| "I have many wonderful memories from R-MC."
Music major Stephen Lecky '02 keeps things humming along as Festival Manager at Venture Richmond, focusing on two major Richmond musical events: the summer Friday Cheers series and the hugely popular Richmond Folk Festival in the fall, which attracts more than 180,000 fans to hear performing artists from around the world. Lecky says that his music major "has been a terrific help in my career," and adds, "Class sizes are small enough to receive great mentoring from your professors. I was lucky enough to have Dr. Doering for many of my music classes—he is an excellent teacher with extensive knowledge of music and the industry."
