International Studies
As an international studies major, you'll develop a deeper understanding of the interrelationships between cultural, political, economic and social systems—essential knowledge for building a successful future in our increasingly interconnected global community.
Major choice: The international studies major is an interdisciplinary program; you'll begin with a group of core courses then choose a concentration either in Culture & Society, with an emphasis in one global region, or International Relations with an emphasis either in political science or economics/business.
Internships and study abroad: All international studies majors complete a travel abroad or study abroad experience. Maggie Smith '10 completed an internship in the conservation department of the Norwegian Folk Museum in Oslo, Norway. Katie Monaco and Susan Frantz, both class of '08, spent a summer attending classes at the University of Marburg in Germany, in a program with students from 21 different countries.
Careers: Whether at home or abroad, graduates of R-MC's international studies program can be found in many different fields, including law, finance, education and business. Coleman Adams '04 is an assistant commonwealth's attorney for the state of Virginia. Brendan Toone '06 is an investment advistor at MetLife. Jennifer Sabine '94 is the managing director of the Paris, France division of the International Institute for Learning, and notes, "I am doing what I hoped to do when I majored in French and International Studies—to be a bridge between cultures."

| "I was impressed by the close-knit community."
Ed'Rienna Thomas '11 was aninternational studies major and an Asian studies minor. When she wasn't studying, the former president of RMC's Track and Field Club could often be found running in the Brock Center or around campus during warm-weather months. Thomas was also a participant in the RMC Study abroad program, traveling to China during the 2009 J-Term. In addition, Thomas was a Habitat for Humanity participant and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (AKA), a new R-MC sorority that was chartered in May 2009. After graduation, Thomas hoped to put her desire to help others to good use, possibly by joining the Peace Corps.
