From Kant to Kafka and Gauss to Planck, from the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century to alternative energy development in the 21st, Germany has produced some of the world's most influential and enduring contributions to literature, philosophy, science, mathematics and other fields. With a major in German at R-MC, you'll immerse yourself in this rich and varied language, culture and history.
Language, literature and more: The German curriculum, under the Modern Languages department, promotes mastery of spoken and written German through courses from elementary through advanced, conversational and business German as well as in a range of classes such as Culture and Civilization, a survey of German literature, and the New German Cinema. With German a valuable language to master both for business and academic pursuits, many students combine their interest in German with other majors such as political science, international studies, business and economics, biology, math or religious studies.
Beyond the classroom: How do you say "Pass the salt, please?" On campus, you can practice everyday conversation at the regular Deutscher Mittagessen German lunch table or Kaffee und Kuchen Stunde ("coffee and cake") social gatherings. You also can join the German club to show your enthusiasm for all things Deutsch. And a treat for cinema lovers are the German movie nights, where students enjoy award-winning films.
Internships and study abroad: Studying abroad can be one of your most exciting, challenging and memorable college experiences. Susan Frantz '08 spent a summer term in Marburg, Germany. Marci Varley '03 also spent a summer term in Germany, then added to her experience with a January-term internship and a post-graduate year in Germany.
From college to career: A liberal arts education prepares you to meet the challenges of any career. Kate Monaco '08, who interned with the German-headquartered STIHL Group as an undergraduate, is now a project manager at Northrop Grumman Information Systems. Jeremy Binder '05 is a technical operations specialist at Monster.com.

A Charles Town, West Virginia native, Charles Kesner Jr. '12 spent January Term 2011 as a Bassett intern at Hanover County's TV99, a local-access channel. A German major with a minor in education, Kesner created music videos, trailers, promotional videos and news packages. Kesner put his German-language skills to good use in fall 2011 when he traveled to Marburg, Germany for a semester abroad. In addition, he worked as a German tutor in R-MC's Higgins Academic Center (HAC). Kesner was an active member of several organizations. He was the fundraising chair for Students of Virginia Education Association, the fundraising supervisor for R-MC's chapter of Habitat for Humanity, the public relations secretary for the German Club, and a member of the yearbook staff. He also worked as a Campus Ambassador. |
