French
From Racine to Rimbaud and Rousseau to revolution, French language, history, culture and literature are the focus of the French major in R-MC's Modern Language department. Mastery of the spoken language is fostered within a curriculum that draws extensively upon the rich French literary tradition.
A feast for the Franchophile: The French curriculum features not only traditional studies in language and literature but also popular classes including business French, advanced conversation, and French cinema. Department members regularly lead January (J-term) travel-study trips to France as well. Majors may also pursue certification for teaching French.
Poesie et plus: Conversation. Film. Poetry nights. The French studies program brings students together for lively and enjoyable programs and events beyond the classroom.
Study abroad: Study abroad is required for all French majors, allowing students to immerse themselves in the daily life of another culture. "One of the greatest benefits of my study abroad included the opportunity to make new friends from around the world," says Aliya Headley, '11, who spent her senior year studying with international students in Nice.
Après R-MC: Where can you find R-MC graduates? Lindsay Bothe '06 is a high school French teacher. Kaitlyn Allan '10 is a Peace Corps volunteer in Cameroon, Africa. Lauren Zagorski '00 is a senior administrator for advertising, events and marketing in the Monaco Government Tourist Office in New York.
