Leslie Hainley '09: a true athlete-scholar
Randolph-Macon College senior Leslie Hainley will graduate on May 30, 2009, but
she has already used her psychology and philosophy majors to obtain admission into
one of the most competitive doctoral programs in her field. At R-MC, she’s been
helping the Yellow Jacket women’s tennis team post a winning record for the second
consecutive season. Hainley has registered a 5-1 record at fourth singles on the
In addition to her work in the classroom and on the tennis court, Hainley is a member
of Phi Beta Kappa, Chi Beta Phi and Psi Chi honors societies, as well as a member
of Randolph-Macon’s Honors Program. She is also a member of the campus judicial
board and the Women's Athletes Outreach organization. In the fall of 2007, Hainley
earned the Douglas W. Foard Phi Beta Kappa Sophomore award.

Hainley, who hails from Wake, Virginia, considers the relationship between her academic,
athletic and extracurricular work essential to fulfilling Randolph-Macon’s mission
to “develop the mind and character of its students.” Hainley affirms that R-MC “encouraged
my participation in athletics on campus, giving me a truly liberal arts experience
and making me a well-rounded individual.”
After graduation, Hainley will attend the University of Maryland at College Park’s
Neural and Cognitive Systems Doctoral Program while specializing in psychology.
While working toward her doctorate, Hainley will study contextual memory in early
childhood. “Randolph-Macon is a school that allows and encourages students to be
active participants in labs, classes, organizations, as well as on the athletic
fields,” says Hainley.
