The Randolph-Macon College Boydton Society celebrated its annual three-day reunion May 28 – 30, 2010 during Commencement Weekend. The Society was established to recognize senior alumni who belong to classes that graduated from R-MC 50 or more years ago. A highlight of the event was the Class of 1960’s spring celebration of its 50
th Reunion which will be followed by its fall celebration during Homecoming weekend in October.
The Class of 1960 kicked off the weekend with a pre-reunion reception at The Ironhorse on Thursday evening. Friday morning both groups enjoyed a welcoming buffet breakfast as they re-connected with old friends. Alumni and their guests were treated to a horse-drawn carriage ride and guided walking tours around campus. The tours included sites on the historic campus and of future projects slated in R-MC’s master plan. Members of the Independents of the Class of 1960 participated in a trip to “Scotchtown” to tour Patrick Henry’s home located just west of Ashland.
Throughout the weekend, Boydton Society members were invited to participate in continuing education programs given by R-MC faculty. The programs included sessions on “Al-Qaeda: The Next Generation?,” presented by Political Science Professor Thomas Badey; “Prehistoric Prozac: Have important clues for understanding emotional resilience been in our hands all along?,” presented by Psychology Professor Kelly Lambert, the Macon and Joan Brock Professor of Psychology; and “Politics and American Humor: What’s so funny about Uncle Sam?,” presented by Humanities Professor M. Thomas Inge ’59, the
Robert Emory Blackwell Professor of Humanities. Friday evening both groups celebrated with a combined reception followed by specially designed separate dinner parties.
On Saturday, members of the Boydton Society and the Class of 1960 dressed in academic regalia and led R-MC’s 244 graduating seniors through the historic campus to the Frank E. Brown Fountain Plaza for the 2010 Commencement ceremony. Afterwards, they gathered for their annual meeting and lunch with a special recognition program in the Butler Refectory of Estes Dining Hall where the Class of 1960 was formally inducted into The Boydton Society. Two awards were given during the program including the Society of Alumni’s Distinguished Alumnus Award, presented to John B. Graham Jr. ’56. Graham earned his B.S. in physics from R-MC and was employed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for nearly two decades. He has been a longstanding member of the Yellow Jacket Club and is a former member of the Society of Alumni. In addition, special guest, Walter R. Beales III was made an honorary member of The Boydton Society. Beales has had a long history of helping to preserve the original Randolph-Macon College campus in Boydton, Virginia.
Saturday afternoon, Mrs. Cheryl Lindgren hosted a tea in the President’s home which was followed by a dinner/dance in the Brock Center featuring an orchestra playing music from the 1950s and early 1960s. The weekend wrapped up with a farewell breakfast Sunday morning in the Trustees Room of Estes Dining Hall.
