Last fall during Homecoming Weekend, as Phil Emerson ’81celebrated his 25th college reunion in the traditional manner at a football tailgate, former President Ladell Payne strolled by his group.
“Mr. Payne walked right up to my wife, Beth, and asked her, ‘Why on earth did you ever marry Phil? You’re a brave woman.’Beth was astounded,” laughed Emerson.“She could not believe that the former college president remembered me after all these years. But that kind of relationship building is vintage R-MC.”
Making Connections
The college’s focus on building connections has served Emerson well. For the last 16 years as executive director of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, which operates Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Victory Center history museums, he has concentrated on building
bridges between diverse groups within Virginia and around the world.
