During Homecoming and Reunion Weekend, October 22 – 24, 2010, more than 1000 alumni returned to campus to celebrate the theme “It’s time to come back!” by reconnecting with friends and classmates.
On Friday, October 22, the annual Homecoming Awards Luncheon was held in the Alumni Gymnasium. Several awards were announced, including the Noë /Kilgore Award, which is awarded each year to a retired faculty member in recognition of an outstanding teaching career and service to Randolph-Macon College. The award was presented to Louise Richards for her 27 years of service at Randolph-Macon as a catalog librarian and head of the technical services department. Richards laid the groundwork for the library’s first online catalog; led the transition from the Dewey Decimal System to the Library of Congress classification system; and was active during the library’s major expansion and renovation project, which was completed in 1987 and renamed the McGraw-Page Library.
In addition, R-MC’s Society of Alumni awarded the Distinguished Service Award to David E. Yawars ’69, the Distinguished Alumnus award to Benjamin S. Schapiro ’64 and John “Jack” P. Frazee Jr. ’66, and the Distinguished Alumna Award to Brig. Gen Malinda E. Dunn ’78. Frazee also served as the guest speaker for the luncheon.
R-MC alumni also had the opportunity to attend the popular “Exploring Wine” lecture, presented by Professor Serge Schreiner, and the Women’s Initiative Panel Discussion, which celebrated 40 years of women on campus. The panel was comprised of R-MC alumnae who are interested in engaging more women in the life of R-MC.
A dedication ceremony was also held to unveil the B.J. Seymour Memorial Bench, which is located on the historic campus along the Janet Harvey Trivette ’78 walkway. Seymour was the first full-time female professor at R-MC. During the ceremony, President Robert R. Lindgren said, “B.J.’s efforts to promote equal opportunities for women were nothing short of inspirational.” On Friday evening, the college hosted a Celebration Gala for alumni and friends with musical entertainment provided by Big Ray and the Kool Kats.
On Saturday, October 23, festivities included tailgating activities and the Homecoming Game. The Yellow Jackets won with a 59-21 win over Guilford College.
Homecoming and Reunion Weekend 2010 ended on Sunday, October 24 with a worship service at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church.
