Haywood A. “HAP” Payne Jr. ’68 Receives Alumni Distinguished Service Award
Haywood A. “HAP” Payne Jr. ’68 was the recipient of the Randolph-Macon College Society of Alumni’s Alumni Distinguished Service Award on October 14, 2011. Robert Lambeth ’71 presented the award during R-MC’s Homecoming Awards Luncheon.
The Society of Alumni created the Alumni Distinguished Service Award to recognize alumni who have made an exceptional contribution to the image of Randolph-Macon and who have supported the programs that aid the college.
Payne is a proud and loyal member of the Randolph-Macon Class of 1968. One of the most successful businessmen that the college has produced, he recently retired as president of Chevron Business and Real Estate Services, where he oversaw the global management of Chevron’s infrastructure organizations, including facilities management, office strategies and business services.
Payne’s presidency at Chevron caps a marvelous 40-year career in the petroleum industry that began in 1970 when he joined Gulf Oil Corporation as a systems analysis chemist. Gulf Oil later merged with Chevron. He rose steadily to positions of increased importance, including general manager of Chevron’s Research Service Department, general manager for Technology Support, and general manager and laboratory director. In 1998, he was named president of Chevron’s Real Estate Management Company; he was promoted to his most recent Chevron presidency in 2001.
Payne has maintained his strong ties and staunch loyalty to R-MC. He served on R-MC’s Society of Alumni, is a longtime member of our elite Presidents Society, and served with distinction as a member of R-MC’s Board of Trustees from 1988-2000; he rejoined the Board again in February 2011.
Residing now in Fullerton, California with his wife, Alice, Payne remains active in numerous professional and civic organizations, including the National Eagle Leadership Forum; Women in Science, Engineering and Technology Advisory Board; American Chemical Society; and Pacific Symphony Orchestra.
Randolph-Macon is grateful to Payne for his generosity toward and dedication to the college.
