Universidad de Salamanca (University of Salamanca)
International Education, Semester Abroad
Randolph-Macon offers a semester abroad program at the University of Salamanca (Spanish and English web sites) in Salamanca, Spain. The college has established its program in Spain out of a belief that total immersion is the most effective means of gaining both fluency in the Spanish language and a full understanding and appreciation of Spanish culture. To qualify for admission to the program, students must have the appropriate level of language preparation.
The University of Salamanca, which was founded in 1221, is the third oldest university in Europe. The beautiful city of Salamanca, with its golden walls and 18th century Plaza Mayor, is rich in history and, like Oxford and Cambridge, has been devoted solely to education since the Middle Ages. Salamanca's central location 100 miles west of Madrid makes many sites of cultural and historic importance easily accessible to our students. (See the University's map of the city.)
Our semester abroad students take classes in the Cursos Internacionales department of the University of Salamanca. The courses offered in this program are taught in Spanish by University of Salamanca faculty who have considerable experience teaching their subjects to foreign students. Courses available through Cursos Internacionales are listed in the Course Descriptions section of R-MC's Academic Catalog.
Detailed information about courses, including course descriptions, course equivalents, and prerequisites, is on our Salamanca Courses web page.
On an individual basis, students who demonstrate sufficient language skills upon arrival in Salamanca may be declared eligible to take regular University of Salamanca courses in place of or in addition to those already approved for inclusion in the Randolph-Macon catalog. Such enrollment would require prior approval by the on-site coordinator of the Salamanca program and the chair of the academic department that would award Randolph-Macon credit.
Cursos Internacionales
The University of Salamanca, through its department of Cursos Internacionales, offers Spanish courses (Language and Culture) at all levels of Spanish as a foreign language as well as Upper Level Courses directed toward graduate students, students in the final years of a major or concentration in Spanish, and students with a good command of the Spanish language.
