International Education, Semester Abroad
Nagoya Gakuin University
(NGU) traces its roots back to an American Methodist missionary, Dr. Frederick C.
Klein, who established Nagoya Anglo-Japanese College in 1887. Since then, and after
its realization as a university in 1964, NGU has had a long history of exchange.
At present, NGU maintains close ties with numerous colleges and universities in
the United States, China, Australia, and Canada. Conversely, through the Institute
for Japanese Studies, NGU hosts a great number of exchange and private international
students from higher institutions all over the world.
Nagoya Gakuin University
offers a variety of liberal arts and science courses that can be taken from the
Faculty of Foreign Studies (English Department or Chinese Department), the Faculty
of Economics, or the Faculty of Commerce. In 1988, a new area was founded, the Institute
for Japanese Studies (IJS), which received formal recognition from the Ministry
of Education. IJS programs, sanctioned under the School of Education Law, provide
Japanese language courses (taught in Japanese) and Japanese area study courses
(taught in English) for international students. All IJS students must take a placement
test at the beginning of each term. Students will be placed in a Japanese language
course according to their test scores. Although a wide range of courses at all levels
in the Faculties of Foreign Studies, Economics, and Commerce is open to students
with the appropriate language abilities, students whose training in Japanese language
is limited will probably be restricted to courses offered by the IJS.
