The Office of International Education (OIE) has organized over 20 events and activities for this year’s International Education Week (IEW), to be held Nov. 16-20th. R-MC’s own theme for this year’s IEW is “Think Globally, Act Locally: Foreign Policy, Food & Folklore.” All events are open to both the R-MC and Ashland/Richmond communities (unless otherwise noted). Description of Event: This 30 minute DVD illustrates the unique backgrounds, philosophies, values, and politics which led each mapmaker to select a particular mathematical formula to create their projection. This provocative presentation explains how maps are not impartial reference objects, but rather instruments of communication, persuasion, and power. Open to public.

Description of Event: Screening of the 2006 French comedy written and directed by Francis Veber with actors Richard Berry, Kristin Scott Thomas, Virginie Ledoyen and Daniel Auteuil. This movie depicts a parking valet who is enlisted to impersonate the lover of a famous model in order to deflect attention from her relationship with a married businessman. Description of Event: Even if you do not understand French, you can get a glimpse of francophone culture through dance styles and the fashion trends that evolve with them. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes so you can learn some moves! In this presentation you will learn about the following:
· La danse électro and le style tecktonik, which has been popular among the younger generation in Paris, involves mostly upper body movements to house music. Not everybody in France likes the trend, and some make fun of it….but imitation is the sincerest form of flattery…Click here for a preview.
· The other trends (such as le coupé décalé and zoomer) come from francophone countries including La Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) in Africa and have spread across the world; they involve whole-body movement to music with a good beat.
