Ghana has a myriad of ethnic groups that both influence and are influenced by each other as well as western culture. Our group focused on different aspects of the Ga-Adangme people. As you explore our site we hope to provide interesting facts as well as insight into the many facets of a diverse culture.
The Ga-Adangme once were a unified group, but after following divergent migration patterns into Ghana became separated. Eventually, the two groups developed different dialects that are now mutually unintelligible. The Ga dialect is the major language of Accra, Ghana's capital city. This particular ethnic group currently comprises about 8-10 % of the population in Ghana. Recent estimations show there are around 1,125,900 Ghanaians that are fluent in the Ga-Adangme dialects. The Ga-Adangme's history and culture is interwoven into larger Ghanaian society. The Ga-Adangme provides an array of customs that are a prime example of the way Ghanaian life combines the past and the present, as well as the sacred and the secular.
