Proud Nationalism
Football is not as popular in the United States as it is in other countries around the world, particularly Ghana. The national team in Ghana is well known and very respected. Football is the national sport in Ghana. The influence of the football culture can be seen in everyday life of Ghanaian people as well as in merchandise sold on the streets. The Ghana “Black Stars” represent hope, prosperity and unity for the entire country, so when they play it is celebrated heavily in every corner of Ghana.

The unity and pride for Ghana is ubiquitous and is seen from billboards to team jerseys to merchandise sales. Vendors walk through the streets supporting their country wearing Ghanaian colors and selling team products. Streets are packed with loyal fans waving huge flags and cars with smaller ones hanging from their windows. The nationalism and spirit associated with soccer in Ghana greatly exceeds that of soccer in the States. The football team of Ghana brings unity to all sections of the society. It does not matter what ethnicity, race, or whether one is rich or poor when it comes to football, as long as you are chanting for Ghana. All televisions and radios are tuned in, the vendors blanket the streets with team merchandise, people are covered in Ghana attire from head to toe, and the stands are packed with people all screaming, “GOAL GHANA!”
