On January 11, 2009, a group of 19 students left their tiny college in Ashland, Virginia to experience a new culture and way of life in Brazil. While in Brazil five of those students would primarily focus on the different types of foods and drinks they would encounter during their two-week stay. Before they left for Brazil, they each had their own ideas about why they wanted to go there and what the food would be like. They were aware of the stereotypes and images that books, magazines and for some, their friends and families had left in their minds. Their goal while in Brazil was to focus on the food they tried, hence the name, "Os Cozinheiros", or "The Cooks". Here, they share their experiences and tasteful thoughts of Brazilian food. Now it is time to meet those five cooks!
The Cozinheiros are flanked by two students at SENAC, a cooking school in Salvador, Bahia

Victoria Williamson - Hi! My name is Victoria Williamson and I am a junior at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. I am from Richmond, Virginia. I am majoring in accounting with a minor in French. I had never been to South America before traveling to Brazil. My favorite thing our class did in Brazil was going to the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janiero. Our class had so much fun in Brazil, but we also learned a lot. |

Benjamin Clements - Oi! Como Vai? My name is Ben Clements. I am a senior at Randolph-Macon, hoping to graduate this spring with a degree in history. Brazil gave me the opportunity to be completely immersed in a new culture; I had no choice but to fall in love with Brazil. The Brazilians are some of the nicest and most patient people I have ever met. I hope to return soon and continue to take in all that is Brazil. |

Brazil was an experience of a lifetime and I really enjoyed my time there. One of the things I enjoyed most about Brazil is the whole excitement about Carnaval. We visited the Salgueiro Samba School, where I had so much fun listening to the music and drummers and watching all of the dancing. I must return to Brazil one day. |
