Designed for students interested in such career areas as music criticism, music journalism, and music publishing. This track also provides an excellent foundation for graduate studies in music history, ethnomusicology, or music theory. The courses fall into the following categories: musicology, legal issues, ensemble, internship, and the capstone.
Musicology (12 credits)
MUSC 334 - Composer's Perspective
This course offers a detailed study of a specific composer's or group of composers' work and the cultural context in which it was created. Emphasis will be placed on understanding compositional style and the ways composers establish their musical voices. Topics will vary from year to year. Tentative schedule includes Aaron Copland (2002), Mozart (2003), Duke Ellington (2004).
MUSC 381 - Special Topics in Music - Genre Study
This course concentrates on a specific music genre (such as the symphony, solo song, string quartet, jazz trio) and explores it from several different perspectives. Students acquire an understanding of the genre's transformations throughout history. Topics vary from year to year.
MUSIC 423 - Researching Music
Music history represents a shifting landscape that requires interpretation. This course provides an introduction to the various methods for acquiring and evaluating primary musical sources. Emphasis will be placed on the correlation between musical performance and music research. Students have an opportunity to conduct original research in a local archive and/or the Library of Congress.
JOUR 204 - Basic News Writing
Ensemble/Applied lessons (3 credits)

Possible sites include music periodicals, music archives, and the Library of Congress.
