German: Collegiate Requirements
The courses in German are open to all qualified students in the college. The GERM 111-112 courses are designed for students who have little or no knowledge in the language. Students who enter the college with two or more entrance credits in German will be placed according to their College Board achievement test scores in the language and the results of a placement examination administered by the department.
The requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree with German as the major field of study include completion of 30 semester hours in the department above the intermediate level. Further, candidates must show before graduation reasonable proficiency in the German language, a good knowledge of German literature of the last two centuries, and familiarity with the history and culture of modern Germany. They must be familiar with the works on a departmental reading list, pass a general departmental examination as evidence of competence in regard to the material listed above, and submit one major paper or several smaller ones within courses to demonstrate the capacity to collect and organize material and to think critically.
Majors and/or persons seeking teacher certification in German should successfully complete a minimum of three semester hours of study in an institution of higher learning in a German-speaking country. We strongly encourage majors to spend one year in the study abroad program in Germany at the Philipps-Universitt Marburg.
A minor program in German consists of at least 15 semester hours above the second-year level, but should not include more than six semester hours in FLET courses offered by the German department. Students preparing for teacher certification in Virginia should include courses in methodology and German culture.
