The emphasis in the English major upon reading with critical insight and writing in a clear and effective manner makes it an excellent starting point for a number of professional careers.
Graduates may use their English background directly in areas such as editing, journalism, copy writing and proofreading, technical writing, advertising, communications, and other pursuits requiring grammatical accuracy and literary skills.
An English background also serves those entering business fields such as sales, marketing, personnel management, and other positions which demand logical thinking and refined communications skills. English majors interested in the business world may supplement their major program with elective courses in business, accounting, and economics.
Graduate school is another direction English majors may consider. A major in English provides excellent undergraduate preparation for law school. In addition, English majors with the proper science courses make excellent candidates for medical school. Several English majors also seek graduate degrees in English or related disciplines. It should be noted, however, that teaching positions in English at the college or university level are currently in short supply.
