Secondary Teaching Endorsement
Programs
for the secondary level are available in the following areas: biology,
physics, chemistry, English, French, Spanish, German, Latin, history
and social science, and mathematics. Any major can feed into the
elementary program.
Since state regulations require that students who plan to teach
complete both their major plus a minor in education, advance planning
is essential for students who will participate in the teacher preparation
program. Students preparing to teach should consult with their advisors
and the Department of Education during their freshman year in order
to begin planning a course of study which is in accordance with
the requirements of the teacher-preparation program. In the college
catalog, each department (with secondary endorsements in education)
should have listed the specific course of study that must be followed
in conjunction with the education minor.
For the secondary licensure, the following courses are required:
EDUC 220-221, 230, 233, 321-322, 346, 355, and 425-426. Ideally,
EDUC 220-221 should be taken in the fall of the sophomore year,
and EDUC 321-322 should be taken in the fall of the junior year.
EDUC 230 may be taken in the fall of the junior or senior year.
Elementary Teaching Endorsement
For the elementary education program, the following courses are
required: EDUC 220-221, 225-226, 227, 228, 233, 321-322, 346, 356,
and 425-426. Starting education courses as early as possible is
advisable. In most cases, students who begin taking their education
courses in the fall term of their second year have adequate time
to complete the program.
EDUC 355 or 356, 346, and 425-426 are part of the block plan which
must be taken during the spring term of the senior year. Consequently,
students who participate in this program must complete all other
degree requirements prior to the final semester of their senior
year.
All education courses include observation and/or field work in school
settings. The education courses offer integrated and sequential instruction
in technology that meet the Virginia Department of Education Technology
Standards for Teachers.
