Requirements for the Drama Major
DRAM 211--Acting I: The course provides the student with the fundamental
vocabulary of the actor, with attention technique in general and a focus on a condensed
form of Stanislavskian acting in particular. Scene work and various training exercises
are required. (3)
DRAM 215--Introduction to Directing: The student is introduced
to the fundamentals of play direction: script analysis, basics of blocking, composition,
and picturization. Also included are discussions of the role and function of the
director as an artist and the skills the director must develop. Scene work with
actors outside the class is required. (3)
DRAM 310--Dramatics Participation: Participation in the activities
of the Randolph-Macon Drama Department in areas including performance, construction
and crew work, stage management, design areas, and other related support and service
activities. One credit is awarded upon the satisfactory completion of each semester
of activity; four semesters are required for the major or minor. (4)
DRAM 330--Theatre Technology and Scenography I: The course demonstrates
the ways in which the changing technology of the theatre affects theatre scenography--the
co-ordinated design of scenery, lights, costumes, and other areas. Students learn
the vocabulary of equipment, the properties of modern scene materials, the advances
in technological fields, and the professional standards in design and technology.
Introduced in this semester are the techniques of design and simple scenic and lighting
design projects which utilize computer assisted design (CAD) programs, although
the greatest use of CAD is in DRAM 331. A hands-on laboratory component is part
of the course, as are occasional field trips to neighboring professional theatres.
(3)
DRAM 331--Theatre Technology and Scenography II: The course continues
and elaborates work begun in DRAM 330, but with greater emphasis on the design and
drafting of scenic and lighting design projects utilizing CAD programs; costume
design projects are included. Computer intensive. Prerequisite: DRAM 330 (3)
DRAM 341--Theatre History to 1700: The course traces the development
of major trends in playwriting, acting, directing, design, and general production
practice from classical Greece to 1700. (3)
DRAM 342--Theatre History Since 1700: A continuation of the study
begun in DRAM 341. Majors ordinarily take 341 first. (3)
#LITERATURE XXX AND XXX--Dramatic Literature: The student will
elect two dramatic literature courses to be chosen from offerings in English, any
of the foreign languages, or the FLET courses. The courses must be chosen for diversity:
for instance, a student may not elect two contiguous periods or two courses focusing
on the dramatic literature of a single country. (6)
#MUSIC XXX--Music OR #ART XXX--Studio Art or Art History: The student
will elect any three credit offering from the catalogue under either of these headings,
provided the course also meets the collegiate arts requirment. (3)
FINA 481--Senior Arts Seminar: A capstone course which investigates
the interdisciplinary relationships of the arts: music, theatre, studio art, art
history, and dance. The direction of inquiry will follow concerns in contemporary
art with special considerations for the needs of the majors. (3)
DRAM 422--Advanced Topics in Drama: Senior students majoring in
the Fine Arts with a drama emphasis will complete one of the following projects:
(1) write a major paper on some aspect of the history or theory of drama, or (2)
have the primary design or direction responsibilities for a major production, or
(3) write an original play of suitable length, or (4) translate into English a play
of another author, the play being previously untranslated. (3)
Total hours: 36
#elective should be chosen by consultation and approval of an adviser in the Drama
