The Major in Latin shall consist of 30 semester hours. Of these, 18 semester hours should be in Latin above the 200 level (Greek 211-212 may be substituted for 6 of these hours), 3 semester hours taken from among Art 214, 215,216, 218 or 219, 3 semester hours of Classics 226, 303 or 312, and 6 semester hours of departmental electives selected from among any Classics course, FLET 201-206, Arth 210-219, Philosophy 251, Latin above 215 or Greek above 112.
The Major in Greek shall consist of 30 semester hours. Of these, 18 semester hours should be in Greek above the 200 level (Latin 211-212 may be substituted for 6 of these hours), 3 semester hours taken from among Arth 212, 213, 216 or 219, 3 semesters hours of Classics 226 or 311, and 6 semester hours of departmental electives selected from among any Classics course, FLET 201-206, Arth 210-219, Philosophy 251, Latin above 112 or Greek above 212.
The Major in Classical Studies shall consist of 30 semester hours. Of these, 6 semester hours must be in Classics 226, 303,311 or 312, 6 semester hours from among Arth 210-219, 6 semester hours of Latin or Greek above the intermediate level (211-212 or 215 may be counted if not used to fulfill the collegiate requirement in foreign languages), and 12 semester hours of departmental electives from among any Classics courses, FLET 201-206, Arth 210-219, Philosophy 251, Latin above 215 or Greek above 212. Students who wish to pursue graduate studies in archaeology should consult the department early in their program since work in allied fields is highly recommended.
The Minor in Classical Studies shall consist of 15 semester hours of departmental electives from among any Classics courses, FLET 201-206, Arth 210-219, Philosophy 251, Latin above 215 or Greek above 212. Latin 211-212, Latin 215, or Greek 211-212 may be counted toward the minor if they are not being used to satisfy the collegiate requirement in Foreign Languages.
The Area of Knowledge: Foreign Languages Component may be met by successful completion of Latin 212, Latin 215, Greek 212, or by advanced placement in either language. The department will administer placement tests to all new students. Any student with prior experience in that language who enrolls in a 111 course without the approval of the Department of Classics may be dropped from that course with a grade of F.
The Area of Knowledge requirement in Arts and Literature - Literature may be met in part by taking any 3 hour Latin or Greek course above the 200 level, any two of the following courses taught in English translation: Classics 201, 202, 203, 205 or 206. These are cross-listed as FLET 201, 202, 203, 205 and 206. These courses may also be counted toward a major or a minor in the department.
The Area of Knowledge requirement in Arts and Literature - Arts may be met in part by taking 3 semester hours from among Classics 210-2119. These courses are cross-listed as Arth 210-219. These courses may also be counted toward a major or a minor in the department.
