Social Stratification
Course Description
This course is an analysis of the structure and dynamics of systems
of social stratification. Within the framework of classical and
contemporary theories of social stratification (Marx, Weber, Pareto,
Mills, and others), students consider the following topics: patterns
of wealth distribution, power and prestige, and the sociologist's
methods of measuring these patterns; patterns of social mobility
and change; the impact of inequality on society; and the future
of inequality in American society. Other special topics may also
be considered. Offered alternate years.
