Medical and Dental schools require a recommendation letter from a committee, so if you plan to apply to one of these schools, then you should schedule an appointment for an interview with the Pre-Medical Advisory Committee in January or Spring term of your junior year. Prior to the interview, you should give an electronic copy of the following materials to the committee chair:
- Resume
- List of extracurricular activities and all medically related experience (if some are not included in the resume)
- List of the schools to which you plan to apply
The interview is a low-stress prelude to the professional school interview. You should dress and act appropriately. The committee has several goals for the interview:
- To give the student a "practice" interview
- To answer any questions the student might have
- To find out more about the student's career goals
- To get an idea of the student's interview style
- To give assistance in writing the resume (although this should be done much earlier with the help of the Counseling and Career Planning Office)
- To give the student a realistic picture of his/her chances of being admitted
- To give suggestions to the student for increasing his/her chances of admission
- To discuss alternatives in case admission is delayed by a year (or more)
- To gather information about the student which will be used in conjunction with the faculty recommendations in writing the committee's letter
Following the interview the Pre-Medical Advisory Committee will discuss the interview and the candidate's qualifications. Generallly, one committee member will write the initial draft of the recommendation letter and the committee will come to a consensus on the final version of the letter. Since there are several options for submitting the recommendation letter to schools (e.g. AMCAS, Interfolio, directly to the school) the student is responsible for providing submission instructions to the committee.
